Minor Policy
Despite there being no actual law dictating a specific age for piercings and tattoos in the state of Indiana, at The Illustrated Man, we will not pierce anyone under 5 years of age nor tattoo anyone under the age of 15. Providing services to minors, even if they meet these age requirements, is ultimately up to the artist you are working with.
If a minor intends on receiving services, their legal guardian MUST present the following as per the Marion County Health Department:
-
Parent’s State ID or Driver’s License
-
Passports are also acceptable forms of Identification for the guardian
-
-
Birth Certificate for the Minor
-
Photo ID for the minor if requesting any piercing other than earlobes (this may be in the form of a passport, school ID, state ID, or yearbook photo)
If the guardian’s name does not match that on the birth certificate, you will be required to also provide legal documentation stating that you are the legal guardian of the minor. There are no exceptions to this rule.
The guardian that accompanies the minor to their appointment is required to stay in the building throughout the entire piercing/tattooing process.
The Illustrated Man does not permit children under 9 months to enter the building, as children this young have not yet received the vaccinations to ensure their safety.
In addition, we strongly discourage bringing children under 2 years of age into the shop as a courtesy to our artists. It is also strongly discouraged to bring your children to a tattoo session, as these sessions are typically much longer than a piercing appointment. If you cannot find childcare for the day of your session, please reach out to your artist directly and inform them that your child will be attending the session so that our staff can prepare to accommodate them.
